Turntable Setup Guide: How to Get the Best Out of Your Audio-Technica Deck

If you’ve just picked up a turntable from Audio-Technica, congratulations—you’re on your way to experiencing rich, analog sound the way music was meant to be heard. But to truly enjoy vinyl, proper setup is essential. This guide will walk you through the basics to help you get the most out of your Audio-Technica turntable.

1. Choose the Right Location

Place your turntable on a level, vibration-free surface away from speakers and direct sunlight. This ensures stable playback and reduces unnecessary needle wear or skipping.

2. Balance the Tonearm

Proper tonearm balance helps reduce record wear and improves audio fidelity. Use the counterweight to adjust tracking force according to the cartridge specs, typically around 1.8–2.2 grams for most Audio-Technica cartridges.

3. Check the Alignment

Use an alignment protractor or a built-in guide (like on the AT-LP120XUSB) to ensure your cartridge is correctly aligned. This avoids distortion and improves stereo imaging.

4. Connect to the Right Gear

Many Audio-Technica turntables include built-in phono preamps, allowing you to connect directly to powered speakers or amplifiers. If yours doesn’t, you’ll need a dedicated phono preamp.

5. Keep It Clean

Use an anti-static brush before and after playback to remove dust from your records. Also, keep your stylus clean using a stylus brush or cleaning solution for better sound and longer stylus life.
